Natalie Ibelhaupt connected on a backdoor layup with 0.5 seconds left to lift the Bearcats to an exciting 74-72 CUNYAC overtime home win over the Dolphins of Staten Island on Bearcats Appreciation Night.
The host Beavers jumped out to a quick 19-8 lead by shooting 58 percent (7-for-12) in the first quarter and that proved pivotal as the visiting Bearcats were forced to play catch up the rest of the game.
The Beavers controlled the game early on, leading by as much as 14 points in the first half. However, the Bearcats put together a heroic rally late in the 4th quarter to take back the lead 61-59 courtesy of 5 unanswered points by Valsenia Michie. CCNY's free throw shooting in the last minutes of the game helped them clinch the win.
Outside of a free throw in the opening minute, the Bearcats never trailed the rest of the contest in what was a highly-entertaining affair against the Maccabees, who are located only a mere few blocks away on Lexington Avenue.
Michael Kotrozos becomes the sixth head coach in the history of the Baruch women's basketball program. Kotrozos spent the 2016-17 season as an assistant coach. He was also previously on the staff during the exciting CUNYAC championship and NCAA Tournament 2014-15 season.
After a 10-7 start in the first period, the Bearcats were able to take control by quickly scoring 14 straight points as part of their 26-6 run in the second quarter to give them a 36-13 lead at the half. The Bearcats never looked back en route to the home win.
