Montclair, NJ – Sophomore forward Melissa Tobie (Elizabeth, NJ, Roselle Catholic) scored a game-high 18 points to lead Montclair State University to an easy 61-40 victory over Ramapo College in a matchup of two unbeaten New Jersey Athletic Conference teams on Wednesday evening at the Panzer Athletic Center.
Tobie, who scored 15 of her points in the first half, got help from senior forward Taylor Jeffers (Franklin Township, NJ, Franklin) and freshman guard Shalette Brown (Somerset, NJ, Franklin Township), who added 13 and 10 points, respectively, for MSU, which improved its record to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the NJAC.

This is best start for Montclair State since the Red Hawks won their first nine games of the 2003-04 season. MSU, now 44-9 all-time against Ramapo, won for the 11th time in the last 13 meetings between the two schools.
In the first half, MSU used a pair of scoring runs to take control of the contest. The Red Hawks outscored the Roadrunners 13-3 to break open an early 10-10 tie to go ahead 23-13 with 8:56 left in the opening stanza. Brown scored six points and Tobie added five for Montclair State. With MSU leading 23-18 with 5:59 to play in the period, the Red Hawks scored the next 16 points, including seven from Tobie, to take a commanding 21-point bulge before going into the halftime intermission, 39-20.,
The Red Hawk defense dominated the second half as Montclair State limited Ramapo, which shot just 28.9 from the field in the game, to just four field goals. MSU also forced the Roadrunners into committing 20 turnovers in the contest with Brown collecting nine steals. Montclair State's margin grew to as much as 28 points three times, the last at 60-32 with 4:08 left.
Junior guard Nicosia Henry (Bolingbrook, IL, Bolingbrook) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for Montclair State.
Sophomore forward Alex Milne (Howell, N.J./Howell ) and senior guard Faith Flannery (Keansburg, NJ/Keansburg) each scored eight points to top Ramapo, which suffered its first loss of the season in dropping to 6-1 and 2-1 in conference play.
Montclair State is back in action on Saturday when they travel to play Rutgers-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game at 1 pm. Ramapo is home at the same time taking on The College of New Jersey.
