NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore forward Abdul Mansaray (Jacksonville, Fla.) poured in a collegiate career-high 32 points on Saturday afternoon to lead the Mitchell College men's basketball team past Johnson & Wales University, 86–66, in non-conference action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
The Wildcats had no answer for Mansaray, who connected on 15-of-23 shooting while adding 12 rebounds, three steals, three blocks, and two assists. Senior forward Brandon Lee (Stockton, Calif.) also enjoyed a big day, finishing with a collegiate career-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Collin Jefferson (Orlando, Fla.) chipped in 10 points off the bench, including a perfect 3-for-3 performance from beyond the three-point line.
Johnson & Wales came out of the gate on fire, jumping out to a 17–9 lead early. Mitchell responded by outscoring the Wildcats 28–16 over the final 13:34 of the opening half to take a 37–33 advantage into the locker room. The Mariners kept up the pressure in the second half, scoring 49 points en route to their second consecutive victory and first winning streak of the season.
Mitchell shot a blistering 53.5 percent from the floor, including 7-of-13 from downtown, while dominating the glass with a 41–20 rebounding advantage over Johnson & Wales.
Alvin Baez led the Wildcats with 27 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.
The Mariners (4–6, 0–0 GNAC) will close out the first semester with a pair of games in Florida, beginning Thursday, December 18, against Warner University.
