No. 23 men's basketball falls at Bruin Classic against No. 6 Whitworth

NEWBERG, Ore. – The No. 23 nationally-ranked St. Olaf College men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest, 75-55, against No. 6 Whitworth in their first game of the Bruin Classic on Friday afternoon at Wheeler Sports Center.

Dominic Bledsoe posted a career-high 15 points, but Whitworth (1-0) shot 55.1 percent from the floor and recorded 36 points in the paint, while allowing just 20 points in the paint for St. Olaf (0-3), as the Oles shot 34 percent from the floor.

Bledsoe led the Oles with 15 points, followed by Austin Korbawith 11 points and four rebounds. Travis Fauchald and Frank Delaney added six points apiece.

Whitworth went on an 8-2 run and held the Oles to just seven points in the first eight minutes of play. St. Olaf got within two at 14-12 with 11:49 remaining in the half after Fauchald sank a three-pointer from the top of the key.

After the Oles came within two, Whitworth ended the half outscoring the St. Olaf 24-8, including 13 points in a row, and took an 18-point lead with just under two minutes remaining at 36-18.

The Oles climbed within 13 points of the Pirates in the second half with a layup from Bledsoe, making the score 49-36 with 12:06 remaining in the contest, but that was as close as they would get.

St. Olaf sank six three-pointers in the contest and forced 17 turnovers by the Pirates, compared to 15 turnovers committed by the Oles.

The game was the second meeting between St. Olaf and Whitworth. The No. 12-ranked Pirates edged the Oles 70-69 on Nov. 19, 2016 at Whitworth in Spokane, Wash.

St. Olaf is back to action Saturday, Nov. 17 for its second game of the Bruin Classic against George Fox, beginning at 6 p.m. (CT).
