(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College men's basketball team dropped its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) today (Saturday, January 03, 2015) as it fell, 84-82, to Thiel College at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the PAC. With the win, the Tomcats improve to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the PAC.
Thiel jumped out to an early 11-8 lead when Luke Kochka made a lay-up with 13:38 to play in the opening half. Thomas More answered with a 19-12 run capped by a three-pointer by sophomore guard Drew Mays (Union, Ky./Ryle) to give the Saints a 27-23 lead with 5:18 to play in the first half. The Tomcats closed out the half on a 16-5 run to take a 39-32 lead at halftime when Avril Campbell made one-of-two free-throws with 39-seconds to play in the half.
Thomas More opened the second half on a 34-28 run to cut the lead to 67-66 with 7:13 to play in the first half when freshman guard Daniel Williams (Louisville, Ky./Jeffersontown) made a three-pointer. Thiel responded with a 13-5 run capped by an Eric Mallinger lay-up with 3:29 to play in the game to increase the lead to 80-71. The Saints used an 11-4 run to cut the lead to 84-82 with 1:01 to play in the game when senior forward Jalen Clark (Frankfort, Ky./Western Hills) made a lay-up, but the Saints couldn't score another basket and Thiel won the game, 84-82.
Sophomore guard/forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) led four Saints in double-figure scoring as he had a game-high-tying 20 points. Joining him in double-figures was senior forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) with 19 points, Williams with 14 points and Clark with 13 points. McGovney led the team on the boards with five rebounds, while Mumford led the team in assists with four.
Thomas More returns to action on Wednesday (January 7) when it hosts Bethany College at 7:30 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center.
