(Swarthmore, Pa.) – The #12-ranked Dickinson men's basketball team pulled away late, holding off Swarthmore College, 68-60, on Saturday afternoon.
The Garnet played even with the Red Devils right from the beginning, as the teams played to five ties in the opening 10 minutes. The game saw seven ties in the first half with Dickinson holding a slim, 27-26, lead at halftime.
Ted Hinnenkamp led the charge in the first half, scoring 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, and grabbing three rebounds. Gerry Wixted tallied six points and three rebounds while first-year Justus Melton came off the bench to score five points and control five rebounds.
Swarthmore scored twice to open the half but junior Brandon Angradi knocked-down back-to-back three-pointers for a 33-30 advantage.
Steve Collins answered a four-point run with another three-pointer to lead 36-34, with sixteen minutes to play.
Karl Barkley hit a triple to tie the game for the ninth time, 41-41, with 12:22 remaining. The Garnet went to the long ball, hitting two more three-pointers to take a 49-47 lead with 9:35 on the clock.
Hinnenkamp tied the game for the final time and Pete Yingst hit a pair of free throws to put Dickinson in front for good at the 7:35 mark. Collins followed with a three-pointer and two foul shots to stretch the margin to seven.
The Garnet would cut the deficit to three on a pair of free throws. Wixted answered from the right corner with a three-pointer to double the lead back to six.
Chris Cox hit two free throws with 1:17 to play and the Devils forced a turnover on the other end. After working the clock down, Wixted buried a three from the top of the arc to stretch the margin to 68-57, with 33 seconds on the clock.
Swarthmore continued to battle, scoring and drawing a foul with 13 seconds left to play. They converted the free throw, but that would be as close as they would get with final of 68-60.
Wixted led the way with a game-high 18 points while Hinnenkamp finished with 17 on 7-of-10 shooting. Wixted went 6-for-7 from the line and grabbed four rebounds.
Cox added seven points, four rebounds and three assists and Collins chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.
Zack Yonda led Swarthmore (3-4, 2-2) with 14 points and six rebounds, going 5-for-5 from the line. The Garnet hit 14-of-15 free throws for the game.
The Red Devils improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Juniata College for the Doc Greene Tournament next Friday. The Red Devils tip-off against North Central (Ill.) at 5:00 pm.
