BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College weathered an early second-half run and went on to defeat Milligan College, 81-71, on the second day of the BC/Don Glick Classic.
The Eagles finished as the only team to go 2-0 in the Classic. The two victories ran the team's winning streak to five straight and its overall record to 5-2.
The Eagles controlled play in the first half, leading by as many as 16 points. Bridgewater used a 15-4 run to take its first double-figure lead of the game.
Two foul shots by Marcus Curry gave Bridgewater a 5-4 lead and a 3-pointer by Matthew Hunter pushed the Eagles advantage to 8-4. Bridgewater's Logan Seacrist sandwiched two free throws and a layup around a short jumper by Milligan's Julian Bailey, giving the Eagles a 12-6 lead. Kyle Welty netted two buckets and Seacrist added a jumper for an 18-8 Eagles margin with 13:19 left in the first half. The Eagles continued to click at the offensive end as buckets by Zach Hunter and Aaron Adams made the score 22-8. The Buffaloes scored on a layup by Milos Petrovic, but layups by Zach Hunter and Keonte Dennis gave Bridgewater its biggest lead of the half, 26-10, with 10:38 on the clock.
The Eagles maintained a double-digit lead until Petrovic scored following an offensive rebound to pull the Buffaloes to with nine, 28-19.at the 7:39 mark.
Buckets by Dennis and Ed Reddick were offset by two inside hoops from Milligan forward Chris Ellis as the margin stayed at nine, 32-23, with 6:19 left.
A 3-pointer by Matt Hunter put the Eagles on top by 12 and the lead stayed in double figures the remainder of the half.
Bridgewater matched its biggest lead when Cameron Thurston hit two foul shots, making the score 40-24 with 2:52 left in the half. The Buffaloes cut the lead to 12 before a layup by Reddick and a tip-in by Thurston once again pushed the margin to 16 points, 44-28. Milligan's Gabriel Logan scored on a layup just before the buzzer, making the halftime score 44-30.
Turnovers plagued the Eagles early in the second half and a 23-8 run pushed the Buffaloes into the lead.
Logan ignited the Milligan offense as he scored three straight baskets to cut the deficit to eight, 48-40. Following an inside bucket from Reddick, Mickey Woods knocked down a 3-pointer and Chris Ellis followed with a short jumper to pull Milligan to within five, 50-45. A layup and another 3-ball by Woods tied the score at 50-50 before Reddick hit from the baseline to put the Eagles up by two. Woods then swished another long 3-pointer, giving the Buffaloes a 53-52 lead with 10:27 left in the game.
The Eagles withstood the Buffaloes surge and a quick 8-0 spurt put Bridgewater out from by seven, 60-53. Reddick scored two buckets and Welty hit two foul shots, making the score 58-53. Adams then took a dish from Seacrist and scored from in close, giving Bridgewater a 60-53 advantage.
Milligan refused to wilt, twice cutting the lead to three points in the final five minutes, but each time the Eagles responded.
A 3-pointer from James Songster trimmed the Eagles lead to three, 64-61, with 4:27 to go, but Seacrist hit 1-of-2 foul shots and Matt Hunter added a pair of free throws, putting the Eagles up 67-61. Woods and Seacrist traded hoops before another 3-pointer by Woods, made it a three-point game, 69-66, with 2:54 remaining.
Seacrist hit two foul shots and, following a Milligan turnover, Reddick scored from the baseline to push Bridgewater's lead to seven, 73-66, with two minutes left.
A layup by Bailey pulled Milligan to within four, 75-71, with 1:11 left to play, but a layup by Seacrist off an assist from fellow freshman Curry pushed the margin to six. Curry hit 4-of-4 from the line in the final 46 seconds to close out the 81-71 victory.
Reddick the tournament's Most Valuable Player, paced the Eagles with 22 points. Seacrist had the most productive night of his young career with 15 points and Matt Hunter finished with 11. Woods led the Buffaloes (10-4) with 18 points and Logan scored 12.
Milligan won the battle of the boards with a 41-32 advantage. Morgan McLeod and Bailey each grabbed eight rebounds for the visiting Buffaloes. Adams paced the Eagles with eight boards and Reddick added seven.
Bridgewater shot 54.9 percent from the floor, making 28-of-51 shots. The Buffaloes connected on 29-of-69 shots for 42 percent accuracy.
