Sophomore guard Quardell Young (Kenosha/Bradford)'s 18 points led sixteenth ranked UW-Whitewater to a 64-50 rout of UW-Platteville in Kachel Gym Wednesday night to improve to 18-4 this season. The Warhawks are second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 10-3 league record. 

The Pioneers grabbed the first lead of the game and held it until the 12:47 mark in the first half when Young's layup pushed the lead into Whitewater's favor 10-3. Less than two minutes later with the score 12-11, a three by Darnell Harris (Milwaukee/Hamilton) at 11:28 started a 14-0 Warhawk run to give UW-W a 26-11 with 5:58 remaining in the first half. The Warhawks would stretch the lead to 17 at the 1:31 mark and headed into the lockerroom with a 36-20 advantage.

Whitewater scored 16 points in the paint in the first half compared to just four for the Pioneers. The Warhawk defense held UW-P to just 24% from floor, 7-29, while the offense shot 55%, 16-29 in the half. UW-W also led in rebounds 23-14. Young led all scorers in the half with 12 points on 6-7 from the floor. Harris added double digits in the first twenty minutes with 10 points.

UW-Whitewater held a double figure lead until Platteville fought its way back into single digits at the 8:58 mark. The Pioneer would come to within six points, 56-50 with 2:53 remaining in the game but the Warhawk defense held UW-P scoreless the rest of the way.

The Warhawks ended with a 39-25 rebound advantage. UW-W finished the game 49% from the floor, 24-49, while Platteville increased its shooting percentage to 30%, 16-53 from the field.

Young led Whitewater with 18 points and four assists in the game. Three other Warhawks added double figures in the scoring column including Harris with 13, junior guard Eric Bryson (Elkhorn/Elkhorn) added 12 and senior center Luke Knoble (Boscobel/Boscobel) had 10. Harris made it a double-double with a game high 10 boards.

Platteville's Chas Cross led all players with 20 points and added a team leading eight rebounds. Eric Gerber posted 10 points including 6-6 from the free throw line, three assists and four steals. Rob Stallion rounded out the double digit scorers with 10.

The Pioneers are 15-8 overall and 8-6 in the WIAC.

UW-W will host UW-Superior Saturday, February 9 at 1:00 in Kachel Gym for Whitewater's annual alumni day.
