Inspired Rally Falls Short as Oberlin Hangs on at Home Against Allegheny

OBERLIN, Ohio – Oberlin took advantage of an extended Allegheny offense draught en route to a 67-59 victory over the Gators at Philips Gym on Wednesday. Trailing by as many as 24, Allegheny pieced together a furious rally in the second half to draw as close as six with under two minutes remaining, but the Gators were unable to complete the comeback as the Yeomen hung on to preserve the home win.

Sophomore forward Chris Milon hammered home a two-handed dunk, and a nice slip and finish to get the Gators going early, but the Yeomen orchestrated an 18-2 behind three and-one finishes and a ice cold performance by Allegheny's offense.

The Gators received a quick lift off the bench from Marco Corona, but Oberlin continued to stretch its advantage as Allegheny endured a difficult stretch from the floor. Scoring their fewest points in a half in nearly two years, D'Andre Corbin buried the Gators' first jumper of the game with five seconds left in the first period. Despite hitting just 8-of-22 (36%) from the floor in the first 20 minutes of action, Allegheny had zero offensive rebounds as Oberlin led 32-18 at the break.

Oberlin, which was the beneficiary of numerous broken plays during the game, opened the second half with a traditional three-point play following an errant shot and a fortunate bounce. Devone McLeod answered with a jumper, but the Yeomen responded with an 11-2 run that stretched the advantage to 24 (46-22) with 15 minutes to play.

Showcasing its resiliency, Allegheny clawed back into the game behind the effort of a few unlikely sources. Brandon Smith made his season debut midway through the second frame and canned a jumper at the top of the elbow to spark the Blue and Gold attack. Freshmen Andrew Sestina and Brian Holland made their collegiate debuts in the tilt, with Sestina totaling seven points on 2-of-2 shooting in addition to four rebounds and two blocks in under eight minutes of work. Junior guard John O'Donnell got into the mix as well, drilling two three's in eight minutes as the gap tightened.

O'Donnell's second knockdown from beyond the arc sliced the deficit to 60-54 with 1:24 left in regulation, but Allegheny was unable to pull any closer. O'Donnell had a chance to slash the lead to a single possession with a pull-up three on the Gators' ensuing possession, but despite taking a bump, no foul was called and the attempt rimmed out. The Gators tried extending the game, but the Yeomen closed 18-of-25 at the free-throw line in securing a season split with their North Coast Athletic Conference rivals.

McLeod scored 16 of his team-high 18 points after halftime, while racking up a game-high tying five assists. Corbin also had five dimes, while adding six points and a game-best three steals.
