VWC improves to 7-0 in conference with win over Eastern Mennonite

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins appeared to be headed for a blowout against Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Eastern Mennonite University on Tuesday at the Jane P. Batten Student Center.The Marlins rolled up a 19-point lead en route to 37-20 halftime lead and seemed to have everything under control.But, when the scoring stopped for the host team and heated up for the visiting Royals, particularly in the final seven minutes, the easy start turned into an intense finish for Virginia Wesleyan in a 60-55 victory.More importantly, it was a victory that pushed Virginia Wesleyan's league-leading record to 7-0 and improved the Marlins' overall record to 11-4.  EMU dropped to 3-4 in the league and to 10-6 overall.Virginia Wesleyan led 41-25 with 16:12 remaining in the second half, before EMU challenged with a 14-2 run that pulled the Royals within a 43-39 score following a timely triple by Adam Burroughs (Roanoke/Northside). But, junior Trent Batson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen), sophomore Cameron Owens (Centreville/Centreville) and rookie Sedric Nady (Chicago, Ill./Virginia Beach Landstown) all came through with key free throws to help Virginia Wesleyan push back out to a nine-point lead. EMU came right back however, as Andrew Thorne (Front Royal/Skyline) and R.J. Sims (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly) led the Royals on a 12-5 run to pull within a 53-51 score with 5:27 remaining to be played.  EMU also trailed just 55-53 at the 3:56 mark, but could not overtake the Marlins.VWC remained poised and came up with the scores when needed, including a big jumper by DJ Woodmore (Virginia Beach/Landstown) with 1:24 remaining to give the Marlins a 58-53 lead with just 1:24 on the clock.Batson turned in a standout effort overall for VWC, posting season-high totals with 12 points and 13 rebounds.  He also blocked four shots and had three steals.  Woodmore led VWC scoring with 15 points and also pulled down 13 rebounds as the Marlins out-boarded the Royals 52-45.  Tre' Ford (Falls Church/J.E.B. Stuart) led VWC with five assists.Thorne led EMU with 18 points and nine rebounds.  Sims finished with 10 points and four assists.--AMDG--
