Oneonta State men's basketball will look to youth for leadership in 2011-12

More news about: SUNY Oneonta

The 2011-12 edition of the men's basketball team will be young.  The Red Dragons have two seniors on the roster, both of whom were not on the squad last season.  Coach Vince Medici will be looking to young players to mature fast as the season wears on in hopes of getting together in time for a late season push towards the SUNYAC tournament.  Medici feels this year's team, despite its youth, will be deep and balanced offensively.

Juniors Cameron Boyden (Vestal/Vestal) and Dan McLaren (Troy/Troy) will look to lead this year's squad.  Both players have seen plenty of time during their first two seasons and have been given the role of team captains.  Both players have continued to develop their games and should be solid on the inside.

Other returning players who will see time and contribute will be a deep sophomore group that includes, Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa), Kevin Donahue (South Glens Falls/South High), Chris Hooks (Cohoes/Shaker), Nick Sarchioto (Duanesburg/Bishop Gibbons) and Ryan Clark (Lynbrook/Lynbrook).  This group is talented and versatile, which will give the Red Dragons plenty of options in its up-tempo style of play.

Newcomers that look to have the biggest impact this winter are freshman point guard, Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) and transfer, Alby Skrelji (Hudson/Hastings).  Kelly is projected as the starting point guard while Skrelji will compete right away for the starting center position.

The season opens at the Franklin & Marshall tournament on Friday, Nov. 18 where Oneonta will face Kean University.  The Red Dragons first home game of the sason will be Monday, Nov. 28 versus Utica College.  Oneonta's first SUNYAC game will be at home Friday, Dec. 2 against Buffalo State.
