Averett got a late basket to knock off No. 2 Randolph-Macon, while No. 21 UW-Oshkosh outlasted No. 6 UW-La Crosse in an overtime shootout, UW-Platteville handed No. 17 UW-Eau Claire its second consecutive loss, Scranton put up its best 12-game start in a little while, and more in Wednesday night's Division III men's basketball action.

Down by two points with under a minute to play, Averett (9-3, 2-1 ODAC) was looking to get a tying basket. However, No. 2-ranked Randolph-Macon (11-1, 3-1) denied the Cougars a clean look. Bracey got the ball near the top of the arc with about eight seconds left on the shot clock, dribbled to his left around a screen but was caught several feet behind the 3-point line as he picked up his dribble as the clock ticked down. Sensing the shot clock was about to expire, he fired an off-balance 3-pointer while being blanketed by a defender.

Nothing but net.

"They were reading all of our action and defending it well," Bracey said of Randolph-Macon's defense. "The shot clock was going down, so I came off the screen, they switched on the screen and played great defense. I saw the shot clock was going down, so I had to get a shot up and shot a fadeaway from like 30 feet. It was all net, and I just have to thank God.

"I felt amazing about it as I was watching it go in," he added. "I thought, 'Yeah, that's cash.' And it went in. … Then I was focused on getting that next stop to secure the win."

The 62-60 victory is the first win for Averett against Randolph-Macon since December 2016, and the Cougars' five losses since then have been by an average of 22.8 points.

Sam Grieger scored a game-high 46 points in 41 minutes, but UW-La Crosse had no answer for Joey LaChapell, or Michael Metcalf-Grassman, as the two combined for 55 points to lead No. 21 UW-Oshkosh past the No. 6 Eagles 121-115 in overtime. Metcalf-Grassman, whose season ended almost exactly a year ago because of injury, registered a season-high and shot 8-for-17 from the floor in the process, while LaChapell also recorded a season-high, going 9-for-11 from the floor and 11-for-11 from the foul line.

La Crosse (11-2, 1-1 WIAC) led by as many as 19 points in the second half, at 57-38, and led by 12, 74-62, as late as 12:37 to play in regulation after a three-pointer by Dustin DeRousseau. But Oshkosh (11-2, 2-0) scored the next nine, then took its first lead of the half on a fastbreak layup by Nate Nazos with under 8 to play. The Titans extended their lead to as many as seven with 38 seconds to play before UWL scored the final seven of the half, capped by a three-point play and a three-point shot by Grieger, to force overtime. Oshkosh never trailed in the overtime, however, and came away with the win.

Sammy Tornabene recorded his third straight double-double, finishing with 23 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, as Scranton knocked off Elizabethtown 74-62 on the road. It's the eighth consecutive win for Scranton, which improved to 11-1, off to its best start since the 2018-19 Royals won their first 12 before finishing 20-6. Elizabethtown (10-2, 3-2 Landmark) tied the game at 42 early in the second half, but Scranton scored the next eight points and was able to pull away on the strength of 13-for-22 shooting, 59.1%, in the half.

Six players reached double figures as UW-Platteville (10-3, 2-0 WIAC) put together a dominant effort in an 88-55 win over No. 17 UW-Eau Claire (11-2, 0-2 WIAC). Senior Joey Fuhremann and junior Lucas Rameker each scored 15 points to share the team lead, while junior Bristol Lewis (13), senior Aiden Wieczorek (12), senior Miles Hettinger (11), and freshman Kaden MacKenzie (10) all reached double digits. The Blugolds entered the contest as one of the top defensive teams in D-III but were unable to slow the Pioneers attack. UW-Platteville became the first team this season to surpass 80 points against UW-Eau Claire and was just the second to reach 70 points.

The lead exchanged hands 20 times as Christopher Newport and Johns Hopkins staged an epic Top 25 showdown at the Freeman Center in Newport News, Virginia. When the dust settled, the Captains, ranked 20th in the nation, held off the 24th-ranked Blue Jays, 68-65, improving to 14-3 on the season. The triumph was the sixth straight for John Krikorian's squad, and the 13th in the last 14 games for CNU. Junior Toa Hollenbeck led the way for Christopher Newport, scoring 18 points with 11 coming in the second half. Senior Collin Hines and junior Ryan Derderian each logged ten points as the Captains upped their home record this season to 7-1.

Chance Casenhiser scored a game-high 27 points as No. 5 Mount Union improved to 14-0, 5-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, defeating Marietta 87-72. Junior Elijah Farrington scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to record his fifth double-double of the season, while junior Kevin Hamilton and senior Caleb Laurich scored 15 and 10 points respectively to round out the Raiders in double digits.

Ethan Edwards poured in nine three-pointers on his way to 38 points as Case Western Reserve rolled past La Roche on the road, 97-78. A grad transfer from fellow UAA program Brandeis, Edwards now holds the Case school mark for three-pointers in a game. It's the fifth consecutive win for the Spartans after a 3-3 start to the season. Case Western Reserve and the remainder of the UAA begin conference play this weekend.

Colin Radcliffe scored a season-high 25 points — all in the second half — including seven three-point field goals, to lead Hampden-Sydney to a 92-79 come-from-behind Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's basketball home win past Guilford on the new Tony Shaver Court in Diaz Arena at the renovated Kirby Field House. The Tigers trailed 49-33 at halftime, before using a 27-11 run to begin the second half and tie it at 60-60 with 11:21 remaining, while outscoring the visiting Quakers 59-30 in the second half. Sophomore guard Santana Lynch added his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high and game-high 14 rebounds, and sophomore guard Peter Moye finished with 12 points. H-SC improved to 8-4 overall, 2-1 in the ODAC, while GC dropped to 6-6 overall, 0-3 in the ODAC, while led by Gabe Proctor with a game-high 28 points, including eight three-pointers.

Trine overcame a 14-point deficit with under 8 minutes left to pull within two at 79-77 on a Logan McKenzie steal and layup with 1:09 left in the teams' MIAA opener at Hope. After a Hope timeout, Mims buried a jumper in the paint to push the Flying Dutchmen's lead back to four. Jayden Bradshaw quickly answered with a layup, cutting the Thunder deficit to two at 81-79. A missed layup as the shot clock wound down gave Trine (8-4, 0-1) a chance to tie or take the lead with 11 seconds remaining.

McKenzie was fouled after grabbing the rebound, sending to the free-throw line. He sank the first but missed the second. Cade Brenner grabbed the loose ball, but without a timeout, Trine scrambled for a game-winning shot. Charles Howell ripped the ball away for a clean steal, then found an open Brendan Cargill, who was immediately fouled. Cargill sank one of his two attempts from the charity stripe with less than two seconds remaining. Hovey tipped the ball back to Marcus Wourman at mid-court and time ran out, snapping a four-game losing streak for Hope, which improved to 6-6, 1-0 in conference play.

Kullen Robinson scored a career-high 36 points and Jevon Yarbrough added 26 points and 11 rebounds as Hood got off to a fast start in MAC Commonwealth play, defeating Albright 114-95. Although the three-pointers did not fall at a high rate for Hood, the Blazers (10-2, 1-0) made up for it with 68 points in the paint. "That's a great win to start conference play and not an easy place to get a win," said head coach Chad Dickman. "I thought the entire team was locked in and brought great energy the entire game."
