Daniel Webster discovered and self-reported a violation regarding the eligibility of a women's basketball player, costing it wins in seven games, including six conference games.
The Eagles had been 22-2.
The player appears to be Ashley Brodeur, who transferred in from Holyoke (Mass.) Community College. She played just a handful of minutes.
Once the error was discovered, the department took immediate steps to self report to the conference office, the NCAA, and appropriate school officials.
“It was a simple clerical error,” assistant athletic director Ken Belbin told the Nashua Telegraph. “Once it was discovered, we were proactive about it. It was an extremely unfortunate oversight we regret deeply. All we can do is admit the error, accept the consequences and move forward. If there’s any one team that can overcome this, it’s our women.”
After reviewing the matter with the New England Collegiate Conference and NCAA, the department has taken the recommended correction of overturning seven regular season victories, including six conference victories. The team's record entering Saturday's play stands at 15-9 overall and 9-6 in NECC play. However, the conference decided opponents will not be awarded either conference or overall wins, which would affect some team's playoff chances but not others.
