Women's Basketball Stays Perfect Against Purchase with 64-35 Win

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's basketball team won its 13th game in as many tries against cross-town rival Purchase College on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Panthers by a 64-35 score. The Valiants were led by sophomore Alyson Caiazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y/St. Saviour), who finished the game with her third straight double-double of the year with 11 rebounds and a career-high 19 points.
The Valiants fell behind early at a 4-1 score with the lone Manhattanville point coming from a free throw from sophomore Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington). Manhattanville answered back with six straight points including a pair of layups from Pabon to put the Valiants up 7-6.
After a basket by Purchase, the Valiants again answered back with seven unanswered and opened up a 14-6 edge. Senior Taylor Wilson (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) put Manhattanville up by nine with her first of two three-point baskets on the evening. Purchase sank another jumper as Lineker St. Hillaire broke the drought for the Panthers but once again the Valiants went on a strong run of yet another six points to open up a 23-10 lead.
Purchase broke off another 10 straight points and ended the half on a high note as the game went to halftime with the Valiants holding onto a three point advantage.
After the halftime break Purchase hit its' 12th consecutive point, which was finally broke up by Caiazzo with a layup to put Manhattanville back up by three. After a Purchase basket at 15:49 of the second half was able to bring Purchase back within four points the Valiants went off on one of the best runs in recent history as the Valiants rattled off 24 consecutive points.
In the stretch, the Valiants were led by Caiazzo with nine points, Wilson added five of her own, fellow senior Jennifer McSharar (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) had three points, while freshman Ashley Franklin (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) had three, two from junior Shauna Mulkerin (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata), and classmate Breana Jackson (Los Angeles, Calif./Crossroads School) rounded out the scoring with her first basket of the season.
The Panthers finally broke the run, but Manhattanville again added another 6-0 run on baskets by Jackson, freshman Ashley Raaf (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Christ The King) and Pabon. On Pabon's layup to end the run, it opened up Manhattanville's largest lead of the game at 32 with 5:19 to go in regulation.
Purchase finished the game outscoring their hosts 7-4, but it wasn't anywhere near enough as Manhattanville ended the game with a 29-point victory.
Caiazzo finished the game with 19 points and 11 rebounds to finish the game with her third straight double-double to start the season. Wilson finished the game seconds in points with 13, while picking off a career-best seven steals as she broke her previous career-high of six set during her sophomore season. McSharar also grabbed 11 boards in addition to her six points, and Pabon netted seven points.
As a team Manhattanville shot 40.4% from the field, including 6-of-11 shooting from Caiazzo, and a combined 6-of-7 shooting from Franklin, Raaf and Jackson. From the charity stripe Manhattanville went 16-for-22, while only shooting 2-of-9 from beyond the arc.
Manhattanville (2-1) will take the next few days off for the holiday before competing on the road next Monday when they travel to take on Eastern Connecticut State at 6:00 p.m. Purchase (1-2) will next play on the floor of the Merchant Marine Academy next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
