The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team will wrap-up the non-conference portion of its 2017-18 schedule this week, when the team travels to Oberlin, Ohio on Wednesday, January 3rd to face Oberlin College. Tip-off on Wednesday is slated for 6:00 p.m.

The Spartans will enter Wednesday's game having won back-to-back games and four of their last five to improve to 5-5 overall, including a 2-1 record in road games. Case Western Reserve recently hosted and won the team title at the Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament, defeating Alfred University 91-85 and Wells College 106-56. The Spartans have averaged 80.8 points per game on 43.0% shooting from the floor and 37.4% shooting from long range, while allowing 79.5 points per game. Senior forward T.J. Duckett has led the team with 13.9 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, while freshman guard Ignas Masiulionis (10.7 points per game) and sophomore forward Connor Nally (10.1 points per game) are averaging double figures this season.
Head Coach Todd McGuinness is in his second season at CWRU. He has a career record of 127-94 (.575 winning percentage), which includes a seven-year stint at Hartwick College, where his teams qualified for the NCAA Championships on four occasions. McGuinness is assisted by Rudy Kirbus, Kelly Blair, Liz Hornberger, Evan Shang and Aleksandar Zivic.
Oberlin stands at 6-5 overall on the season, including a 4-2 home ledger. The Yeomen recently turned around a four-game losing streak with back-to-back victories at home against Chatham and Muskingum last weekend. The team is averaging 72.3 points per game on 48.1% shooting overall (including 41.2% from three point range), and has allowed 72.0 points per contest. Oberlin has been led by the trio of sophomore guard Joshua Friedkin (15.7 ppg), junior guard Eli Silverman-Lloyd (15.3 ppg) and sophomore forward Andre Campbell (12.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg) this year.
The Yeomen are coached by Isaiah Cavaco, who has gone 75-216 during his 12 seasons with the team. He is assisted by Timothy McCrory, Bruce Johnson and Yago Colás.
The Spartans hold a 31-23 advantage in the all-time series against Oberlin, which dates back to the 1971-72 season. The teams last played during the 2013-14 season, with CWRU claiming a 78-68 win over the Yeomen at Horsburgh Gymnasium. The Spartans have won each of their last five meetings with Oberlin.
The Spartans set a program record with 20 made three pointers against Wells College on Saturday, besting the previous record of 18 in a game, accomplished against Kalamazoo on December 29, 2015… The team shot a season-high 51.3% from long range in the game… The Spartans are 2-0 this season when shooting 50.0% or better on three-point attempts, and have won four of their last five games over the past three seasons when they have made more than half of their three point attempts… CWRU's 50-point margin of victory over Wells was the largest in program history, breaking the previous mark of 46 points, set during a 102-56 win over Denison on December 1, 2007… The Spartans have scored at least 100 points in a game three times this year, after not breaking 100 points in a game during the entirety of the 2016-17 campaign… T.J. Duckett was named the Most Valuable player at the Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament, while freshman guard Michael Volkening was selected to the All-Tournament Team… Volkening recorded career highs with 21 points and seven assists against Alfred, shooting a perfect six-for-six from the floor in the game, including three-for-three from three point range… Duckett recorded his fifth double-double of the season with his 16-point, 11-rebound performance against Wells, and now has 16 double-doubles over his career, all during the last two seasons… Duckett had four double-doubles against non-conference competition last season… He will begin the week ranked 13th in school history with 470 career rebounds… He is currently on pace for 260 rebounds this season, which would rank as the second-most in a campaign in program history… Ignas Masiulionis ranks fourth among UAA freshmen in points per game, fifth in steals and assists per game, and sixth in rebounds per game... The Spartans will be looking for their first three-game winning streak since November 17-21, 2015.
