CLEVELAND – Senior forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) scored a game-high 26 points and eclipsed 1,000 for his career as the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team defeated Wilmington College, 72-65, in the championship game of the 2014 Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Tournament at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
CWRU is 3-0 for the first time since the 1990-91 season and wins the STJ Memorial Championship for the second year in a row. Wilmington drops to 1-2.
McLoughlin became the 19th member of the program's 1,000-point club with a three-pointer at 6:38 of the first half. His five treys in the game give him 163 for his career, which ranks sixth in program history.
In addition, freshman forward Eric Black (Avon Lake, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) scored a career-high 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting. Junior point guard Jimmy Holman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) posted seven points and six assists (for the third game in a row).
Led by senior guard Julien Person (Paris, France/Second Baptist, Texas) with four, the Spartans totaled 11 blocked shots to run their three-game total to 28.
McLoughlin was named MVP, and Black earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Wilmington utilized an early 8-0 run and led 12-9 when Dwight Johnson hit a layup at the 11:42 mark. Then with his team down 15-11 at 8:44, McLoughlin took over with 12 points in a row on four three-pointers. The third triple at 6:38 gave him 1,001 points for his career, and the fourth put CWRU ahead 23-18 with 5:39 left before halftime. By the break, the home lead dipped to three, 30-27.
McLoughlin finished the opening period with 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc.
The Quakers pulled to within one twice in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Spartans were able to stabilize and eventually build their advantage to 47-37 with two Holman free throws at 8:42. The lead reached 12, at 57-45, following a Black dunk with 5:25 left to play, then grew to a high of 13, at 61-38, after two McLoughlin free throws at 4:03.
Ben McGriff and Law Williams scored 10 apiece to lead Wilmington. All-tournament selection R.J. Leppert finished with nine points and seven rebounds.
The Spartans now open a stretch of five in a row away from Cleveland with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Denison University on Tuesday, November 25 in Granville, Ohio.
