The Presidents Council of the Empire 8 Athletic Conference is pleased to announce the addition of Stevens Institute of Technology as a full member effective fall 2007. The Ducks will compete as a field hockey member effective fall 2006.

“The addition of Stevens Institute to the Empire 8 is an exciting development” said Empire 8 and Alfred president Charles Edmondson. “Not only does Stevens share our conference philosophy of athletics as a learning experience for students, it also adds to our already strong reputation for academic excellence."

Stevens had previously committed to a new conference involving schools from New York City to Washington, as yet unnamed but commonly referred to as the Interstate 8. That conference was formed in December with play to start in the fall of 2007.

"Stevens Institute of Technology is honored to become a member of the Empire 8 which consists of highly respected educational institutions dedicated to enhancing the learning experience of their students and to conducting the highest caliber programs for their student-athletes," said Stevens president Harold J. Raveche.

Empire 8, which hopes to add at least one additional full member, sponsors 22 sports and Stevens will participate in all conference sports with the exception of football.

Stevens currently ranks 11th on the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Division III Director's Cup standings.

“As an institution, we have decided to move in a different direction in terms of our conference affiliation,” athletic director Russell Rogers said. “We have tremendous respect for the other seven schools in this conference, and we felt that it was important to make our decision well ahead of when league play was scheduled to begin in the fall of 2007.”
