The games: Springfield (24-5) vs. Wesleyan (22-4), 6 p.m. ET; No. 3 Bates (25-2) at No. 4 Southern Maine (28-2), 8 p.m. ET; winners meet Saturday at 7 p.m. ET Location: University of Southern Maine, Gorham, Maine On the air: The entire sectional will be broadcast by D3hoops.com for NCAASports.com. Springfield is making its 10th straight postseason appearance, including its fourth NCAA Division III Tournament showing in the last five years. The Pride made three consecutive NCAA appearances from 2001 to 2003, including a regional semifinal appearance in 2002 which SC hosted in Blake Arena. Springfield also played in the 1982 Division II Tournament. Making its fifth appearance in the NCAA tournament, Bates has advanced to the Sweet 16 once, but lost to Johns Hopkins, 69-56, during the 1997-98 season. Wesleyan raced out to an 11-0 record, tying the team mark for most victories to start a season (set in 2003-04). Hannah Stubbs has 993 career points and looks to become only the ninth Wesleyan woman to go over the 1,000-point plateau. If she does, she will be the first Cardinal woman to do it as a junior. Springfield owns a 6-3 record all-time versus Wesleyan, despite a 74-53 setback to the Cardinals earlier this season on Dec. 10. The Pride handed an undefeated Wesleyan squad its first loss of the 2003-’04 season, 52-44, on the road thanks in part to forward Kacey Wunsch’s seven points and 10 boards. SC freshman guard Tara McCarthy has established herself as one of the top young players in the northeast as she was voted the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year and a second-team All-NEWMAC honoree, Tuesday. Second on the team in scoring (13.3 ppg), she has averaged 14.5 ppg during SC’s current 11-game win streak and has led the Pride in scoring in six of those contests. SC’s top three-point shooter (54-of-148, 36.5%), she scored a career-high 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting (including 6-of-9 three-pointers) in a 91-69 victory over Clark (Jan. 25). Bates beat Southern Maine and Wesleyan in the regular season. Bates beat Southern Maine, 61-37, on Nov. 23, and Wesleyan, 84-49, on Jan. 29. Springfield junior forward Courtney Parvin has played a starring role for the Pride during its run into the postseason. The junior forward has averaged 15.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 44.4% from the floor and 47.1% from 3-point range in SC’s current 11-game win streak. In the Pride’s two NCAA Tournament victories, she has averaged 19.5 points (including a career-high 24 in SC’s win at Mount St. Mary last Saturday), and a blistering 63.6 % from the field (14-of-22), including 7-of-9 three pointers (77.8%). Bates forward Olivia Zurek was named NESCAC Player of the Year, while Wesleyan forward Hannah Stubbs joined her on the first team. Notes are assembled by D3hoops.com from releases sent by the participating schools. |
