Freshman Samantha Hood's 3-pointer broke a 51-51 tie en route to the 59-53 victory.
VIRGINIA BEACH — Tara Rausch scored a game-high 19 points and added 11 rebounds as Wilmington finished the game on a 16-4 run, defeating Bowdoin 59-53 to win the 2004 women's national championship. It's the first national championship for Wilmington in any team sport, capping an exciting weekend of four tightly contested games.

"We knew we just had to wait until we could bring Tara back," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. The first-team All-American picked up her fourth foul with just under seven minutes to play, then sparked the comeback. The full story and photo gallery.

It was the end to Bowdoin's quest to become the fourth school to finish a season as the undefeated national champion. But this is not the defining moment of their lives. Bowdoin fell to 30-1.
