Marymount 79, Salisbury 52

SALISBURY, Md. — Senior guard Jodie Knotts scored a game-high 21 point, including four 3-pointers, and three others also finished in double figures as Marymount upset host Salisbury 79-52 in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.

Marymount (23-6) advances to Saturday's sectional final to face King's, which defeated Scranton 72-57 in the other sectional semifinal played in Salisbury.

Salisbury, which had its nine-game winning streak snapped, finishes the season with a 24-5 record, tying the school's single-season victory record.

Leading 25-20 late in the first half, Marymount outscored Salisbury 9-0 over the final 2:44 of the first half for a 34-20 halftime edge.

The Saints, who finished with nine treys in the game including five of six in the second half, maintained a double-digit lead throughout most of the second 20 minutes. Salisbury pulled to within nine at 40-31 with 15:04 remaining on a jumper by senior guard Jaime Kohlenstein (9 points), but Marymount answered with an 8-2 run over the next 2:47 to push the lead to 15. Salisbury would get no closer than 12 the rest of the game.

For Marymount, guard Candice Brown finished with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Forward Katie Jarvis added 12 points and forward Ashlee Courter had 11.

Freshman guard Cyndi Benjamin finished with 16 points off the bench to lead Salisbury. The Sea Gulls shot 26% for the game (18 of 68) and converted just four of 25 3-point attempts.

Marymount's victory evened the season series between the two Capital Athletic Conference rivals at 2-2, and avenged a 71-56 loss at Salisbury two weeks ago in the CAC championship game.
