No. 19 Webster earned its first-ever trip to the Sweet 16 with
a 48-33 win against Lakeland on Saturday in a NCAA tournament The Gorloks (25-2) won their 18th consecutive game and advance to play No. 9 UW-Stevens Point, an upset winner over top-ranked Washington University. Lakeland finishes the season 26-3. On a night when they shot just 36% from the field, the Gorloks won this game thanks to a stingy defense, which forced 32 turnovers and held Lakeland to an even-lower 30% shooting. "Our defense was amazing," Webster coach Ryan Barke said. "Our frontcourt did a great job of guarding, and our half-court defense was able to keep them off-balance." The Gorloks came
out tight, Barke said, and needed a basket at the "Both teams came out nervous, a little tight, and didn't shoot well," Barke said. The score remained close until the game's final five minutes, when Webster turned an eight-point lead into a 17-point advantage. "We did a better job of getting the ball inside," Barke said. "We got the same kind of shots, but we were nervous in the first half. This time, we got the ball to our post players and, as a result, were able to get to the free-throw line." Freshman forward Angie Carr and senior forward Halley Spann each scored 11 points to lead the Gorloks. Senior guard Jill Dewane led Lakeland with 14 points. |
