UW-Stevens Point 66, Washington U. 60

ST. LOUIS — The top-ranked Washington University women's basketball team was upset 66-60 by ninth-ranked UW-Stevens Point in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship at the WU Field House on Saturday afternoon. The loss ended the Bears' 70-game home winning streak, their 36-game overall winning streak and their 20-game NCAA Tournament winning streak.

The Bears were sluggish early on as they missed six of their first seven shots and committed eight turnovers. Freshman Hallie Hutchens was the only bright spot for the Bears as she scored WU's first six points, but the score remained tied at 12-12 with 9:19 left in the first half. UW-Stevens Point then went on an 18-3 run, highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers by Amie Schultz and Andrea Kraemer, as the Pointers took a 30-17 lead with 1:35 left.

UW-Stevens Point took a 32-21 lead to the lockeroom after forcing 16 Washington U. turnovers. Sophomore Lesley Hawley led the Bears with eight first half points while Hutchens had seven points and 11 rebounds. Carry Boehning led Stevens Point with 10 points. The Bears shot .321 (9-for-28) from the field in the first half, including 0-for-6 from 3-point range.

The Bears began the half with a 7-2 run as they cut the Pointers' lead to 34-29 with 15:57 left. Senior Kristi Eller knocked down a 3-pointer, sophomore Suzy Digby added a lay-up and Hutchens added two free throws as Washington U. cut the UW-SP lead to 38-36. Wisconsin-Stevens Point held onto a 40-38 lead before the Pointers went onto a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 49-40. Junior Laura Crowley knocked down her team-leading 72nd three-pointer, Digby added a layup, and Hutchens hit two free throws as the Bears cut the lead to 57-54 with 4:28 left.

Hutchens answered again for the Bears as she scored on a turn-around jumper to cut the UWSP lead to 62-60 with 1:20 left. Eller had a chance to tie the game with 34.1 second left, but her shot was too strong. Tara Schmitt made two free throws with 18 seconds left to ice the game for the Pointers.

Hutchens led all scorers with a career-high 19 points. She also pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds. Eller finished as the only other Bear in double figures with 11 points. Boehning led the Pointers with 18 points and nine rebounds. Kraemer added 13 points and seven boards.

Washington shot 40% from the field while holding UWSP to 36% shooting. The Bears also committed 23 turnovers.

Washington U. finishes the season 25-1 while UW-Stevens Point (26-3) advances to the Sweet 16 to take on Webster.
