Wesleyan 73, Ithaca 67 ITHACA, N.Y. Ohio Wesleyan jumped out to an 11-2 lead and never trailed, holding off host Ithaca for a 73-67 win in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. The Battling Bishops improve to 21-7 and advance to play in nest Saturday's sectional. The Bombers, whose school-record 14-game winning streak was snapped, pulled to within two points in the final minute, but Ohio Wesleyan's Michelle Wolfe put in a rebound with 30 seconds left to put the Battling Bishops up by four. Freshman forward Kelly Heil added two free throws with 13 seconds left for the final margin. Heil and Wolfe each scored 16 points, with Wolfe adding nine rebounds. Junior center Mindy Hammond scored 12 points and led the winners with 14 rebounds and five assists. Sophomore guard Jennie Swatling paced Ithaca with 14 points; sophomore guard Alex Ivansheck added 11 points, seven assists and three steals. Sophomore center Heather Savignano recorded 10 points off the bench. |
