Bowdoin 80, Emmanuel 66

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Bowdoin got 14 points off the bench from Courtney Trotta and a game-high 19 from Kristi Royer in an 80-66 victory over Emmanuel in the second-round of the Division III NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears (25-1) reach the Sweet Sixteen for the second straight season where they will face Springfield College. The Saints end their season with a 27-3 record. Regional semifinal information will be announced on Sunday.

The two teams opened the game by missing nine of the first ten shots as both squads struggled to get on the scoreboard. Jumpers by Lora Trenkle and Alison Smith gave the Polar Bears a 6-2 lead five minutes into the game. Back-to-back buckets by Nessie Parham gave Emmanuel a 7-6 lead about just minutes later. The teams spent the rest of the half trading baskets as the Polar Bears maintained a one-point edge at 21-20 with 5:12 remaining. Bowdoin rolled off an 11-2 run over the next two minutes to take 32-22 lead at 2:55. A pair of free throws and a jumper by Emmanuel's Julia Demirer closed the lead to 32-26 at intermission.

The Saints closed the Polar Bear lead early in the second half as a pair of Parham free throws tied the game at 36 with 14:48 left in the game. But Bowdoin bounced back as Kristi Royer knocked down a 3-pointer at 14:24, keying an 11-2 Polar Bear run that would pu the contest away. Two more 3-point shots by Courtney Trotta and another 3-point basket from Lindsay Bramwell forced the Saints to call timeout with ten minutes left on the clock, down 50-40.

Emmanuel had one more run to close the game to 56-51 at 6:34, but another Polar Bear spurt of 8-2 stretched the lead out as Bowdoin cruised to the victory. The Polar Bears would lead by as many as 18 in the closing minutes before taking the win.

With 19 points, Kristi Royer became the eighth player in school history to cross the 1,000-point mark for her career. Courtney Trotta (14) and Erika Nickerson (8 points, 10 rebounds) led the charge off the bench for Bowdoin as Lindsay Bramwell (17) and NESCAC Player of the Year Lora Trenkle (16) also reached double-figures.

Emmanuel was led by 16 points from Julia Demirer as Nessie Parham (13) and Marcy Tillman (12 points) also reached double-digits.

Bowdoin held a 55-31 edge in rebounds for the game, including 20 offensive rebounds.
