Scranton 71, Western Maryland 61
SCRANTON, Pa.— Junior forward AnneMarie Russo scored 15 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead Scranton to a 71-61 victory over Western Maryland in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday evening at the John J. Long Center.

The fourth-seeded Lady Royals also received 12 points and seven assists
from sophomore guard Katie Dougherty and 10 points and four rebounds from junior forward Amy O'Rourke to win its seventh consecutive game and improve to 24-4 overall. Scranton will advance to play the No. 1 seed, Messiah, this Saturday, March 2, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Brubaker Gymnasium in Grantham, Pa. Scranton defeated Messiah 79-48 earlier this season.

Western Maryland, making its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance, was
led by sophomore guard Toby McIntire with 15 points and freshman guard Kelly Cramp added 14 points and six rebounds. Junior guard Jen Piccolomini had 11 points and eight rebounds for the Green Terror, who finished the season 22-7.

Russo scored six points and pulled down eight rebounds and Gillian
McGovern and Eileen Webster chipped in five points apiece as the Lady Royals took control of the game in the first half and led 31-20 by intermission. Scranton used a 20-12 run to break away from an 11-8 lead at the 11:27 mark of the first half.

Dougherty and senior guard Lisa Crawford knocked down 3-pointers during a 11-2 run to start the second half as Scranton pushed its lead to 20, 42-22, with 17:33 remaining. The Lady Royals' largest lead was 24 points, 57-33, with 9:52 left on a lay-up by Dougherty. The final score was the closest the Green Terror would get the rest of the way.

Scranton pressured Western Maryland into turning the ball over 24 times and limited the Green Terror to only 30.8 percent shooting from the field. The Lady Royals also canned 14 of 19 free throw attempts (73.7%) in the second half.

Lady Royal sophomore guard Kate Pierangeli, who was named first-team all-MAC Freedom earlier in the day, suffered a foot injury in the first half and played only nine minutes. She is questionable for Saturday's game at Messiah. Earlier in the day, Russo was named second-team all-conference.
