Case
Western 59, Mt. St. Mary 56 Case Western Reserve sophomore Jasmine Rowan took an inbounds pass with 1.2 seconds remaining in regulation and banked in a 3-point basket from the right sideline as the buzzer sounded to carry the sixth-seeded Spartans over No. 3 seed Mount St. Mary 59-56 in an East Region first-round game. With the win, Case Western advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament to play second-seeded St. Lawrence at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Rowans basket came moments after officials ruled that the Spartans had called for a timeout before launching a missed 3-pointer as the final seconds ticked away. Following the reset, there was just enough time for Rowans heroics. Rowans game-winning shot came after MSMC senior co-captain Amanda Marcoux tied the game with a tough 15-foot runner with 3.9 seconds remaining. Marcouxs basket momentarily atoned for two critical missed free throws in the final 52.4 seconds. Following a tightly contested second half, the Mount appeared to be in trouble after falling behind 53-48 with 3:24 remaining on a layup by Terri Williams. The Knights responded with four unanswered points to cut the lead to one with just over two minutes to play. Both teams traded free throws down the stretch before the wild final seconds. Neither team built up much momentum in the opening twenty minutes as both teams played tenacious defense. Case Western opened up the biggest margin of the half after pulling ahead 20-14 on a 3-pointer by Liz Hanschen. The Spartans matched that lead with 1:05 remaining on a 3-pointer by Dawn Bialosky. MSMC went into the intermission trailing 26-22 as Lindsey Charette blocked a shot and beat the Spartans down court to convert a layup on a feed by Marcoux. The Knights opened the second half on a 9-2 spurt. Mount St. Mary continued to ride their momentum and grabbed a 35-30 lead its biggest of the night with 16:40 to go. Angie Zeuch connected on two big hoops for the Spartans as Case Western regained a 49-46 advantage with 5:59 to play. Zeuch ended up as the Spartans leading scorer with 12 points. Bialosky added 11 points and eight rebounds. JeNine Nickerson chipped in with 12 rebounds. Staples paced the Mount with 16 points. Marcoux finished with a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds). Case Western, ranked No. 20 in the nation, improves to 20-6 on the year. MSMC finishes the season at 21-6. |
