Christopher Newport 71, Hood 40

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Christopher Newport women built a 42-19 halftime lead and scored a 71-40 victory over Hood in a first round NCAA Tournament game Wednesday night at The Freeman Center.

The Lady Captains used a 17-0 run late in the first half to take control with Tomorrow Lofton scoring 10 of the points.

CNU (24-4) will move on to the second round where it will visit Marymount (21-6) on Saturday at 7 p.m. Marymount won an earlier meeting between the schools, 72-65 on Nov. 24 in the Freeman Center.

For the Lady Captains, Lofton finished with 20 points, Tia Moore scored 11 and had nine rebounds and Jen Harrell added 10.

Hood, which finishes the season 21-7, was paced by Roxanne Koppenhaver with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Melissa Kolb scored 10. CNU, which equaled its school record with its 24th victory, is 24-4.
