Carleton 71, Wartburg 61
NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Renée Willette (left) scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds as No. 15 Carleton posted its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, edging Wartburg 71-61 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before a packed house of 1,200 in West Gym.

Bethany Koehler added 14 points and five rebounds for Carleton (24-5). Angie Grabowski added 11 points off the bench as the hosts owned a 23-4 edge in bench points.

"The bench is what's really gotten where we are this year," Carleton head coach Tammy Metcalf-Filzen said. "We feel that we have seven or eight starters — we just can't start seven or eight. They're coming off the bench and they're playing well. If we can get people of the floor for four or five minutes and then give them a breather, we can really keep them pressed."

Wartburg's Holly Mohs scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead all players. Brianne Schoonover added 17 points, and Jessica Menne was also in double figures with 13.

"I thought that Mohs really hurt us on the inside," Metcalf-Filzen said. "Beth [Freeman] came in and did some things and contained her a little better. When it comes to tournament time, people have outstanding players and you have to be able to take away some things they want to do."

Wartburg (21-7), the Iowa Conference co-champions, broke to an early 12-4 lead. Carleton battled back took the lead on a Koehler offensive put back. The rest of the first half was back and forth with a total of four ties and 13 lead changes. Wartburg led 32-31 at the break.

"We had some great looks in the first half and we just couldn't knock them down," Metcalf-Filzen said. "We're going to have to shoot better [if we want to advance]."

The second half started slowly for both squads, but Carleton scored the first four of the half to lead 35-32. After Schoonover canned two free throws to bring her team within one, Carleton posted an 11-3 run, pushing the lead to 53-45.

Carleton eventually built the lead to 10 before Wartburg made a final push. Four Mohs free throws, a Schoonover jumper and two Schoonover free throws brought Wartburg within two, 59-57. Willette hit a baseline jumper, Karissa Kramer hit a jumper in the lane and Carleton connected on eight straight free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Carleton advances to Saturday's second round at Chapman, winners over Pomona-Pitzer.
