St.
Benedict 91, UW-Stout 80 With Stout (23-5) trailing 66-64 at 9:32 remaining in the game, the Blazers (24-4) went on a 16-1 run to take an 82-65 lead and the rest was history. The Blazers were able to beat Stout's pressure defense for most of the evening, but especially in the second half. St. Ben's also frustrated the Blue Devils, which was evidenced by Stout's foul count that sent the Blazers to the line 38 times, sinking 26. Stout had four players foul out of the game and had two players with three fouls. Stout sent St. Benedict to the line for the double bonus midway through both halves. But the Blue Devils couldn't really complain about the line, going there 29 times themselves, making 21 shots. After trailing by eight points in the first half, Stout went up 47-39 later in the half and carried a 47-44 lead into the locker room. The Blazers tied the score coming out of the locker room. The teams traded lead changes several times during the second half, but the Blazers took command. Michelle Barlau had 28 points for the Blazers to lead all scorers. Mia Peterson chipped in 22 points and Danni Hannon added 11. Kim Johnson pulled down 16 rebounds. The Blue Devils were led by Stacie Anderson with 13 points. Amy Zelinger and Erin Churchill each had 12 points and Laura Verdegan finished with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Stout held a 28-16 lead on the boards after the first half, but the much taller Blazers wound up finishing the game with a 47-41 lead off the glass. St. Benedict will travel to Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma, Wash., on Saturday. |
