HOLLAND, Mich.
Albion outscored Hope 12-2 over the final 4:18 to claim a 69-65 victory over the Flying Dutchmen and set-up an exciting final week of regular season play in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. With the victory, Albion (19-4 overall, 8-2 MIAA) forged a tie with Hope atop the league standings. Albion finishes the regular season with home games against Kalamazoo and Olivet next week.
"This game was very similar to the one played at Albion," said Albion head coach Mike Turner. "Hope led most of the way, but we were able to get a run at the end. We walked into the lion's den and somehow came out with a victory. Everybody contributed to this victory. Teamwork is what our team is all about. I couldn't be prouder of our guys."
After Hope took its largest lead of the second half at 63-57 with 4:43 remaining in the contest, the Briton defense clamped down on the Flying Dutchmen, holding them scoreless for more than four and a half minutes. In their last seven possessions of the game, the Flying Dutchmen turned the ball over twice and missed four 3-point attempts. Hope's only score down the stretch was a jumper by Jeff Carlson with eight seconds left.
Junior forward Joe Finland scored a pair of baskets, sandwiched around layups by sophmores Michael Thomas and Travis DePree to put the Britons in the lead for good.
Chris Hawkins made a pair of free throws to give the Britons a two-possession lead. After Carlson's jumper, senior guard Brett Quayle sank a pair at the charity stripe to finish the scoring.
Finland came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points on 8 of 9 shooting and a 2 of 3 effort at the free throw line. Thomas also contributed 18 points and nine rebounds, while Hawkins tallied 10 points.
Senior center Pat Moultrie finished with seven points, while DePree contributed six points, eight rebounds, and two blocked shots. Quayle tallied four points and Marcus Gill, Garrett Gibbons, and Jeff Burgess each added two points.
Don Overbeek led all scorers with 19 points for Hope (18-4, 8-2).
