ASHLAND, Va.
Junior forward Kurt Bergmann scored a game-high 24 points on 10-for-16 shooting (62.5%), including 4-for-6 from 3-point distance (66.7%), as No. 3 Randolph-Macon defeated visiting Virginia Wesleyan 69-49 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game on Saturday, February 8. Bergmann also grabbed five rebounds and earned a team-high two steals.
Also for the Yellow Jackets, freshman forward Justin Wansley shot 7-for-9 (77.8%) for a career-high 16 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. It was Wansley's first start of his career, as he filled in extremely well for Randolph-Macon's leading scorer and rebounder, senior All-American candidate Jared Mills, who was injured before the game.
With their ninth consecutive win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 21-1 overall and 14-1 in the conference. This is the best record for the Randolph-Macon program since the 1974-75 season, when the Yellow Jackets also won 21 of their first 22 games.
The Marlins fell to 15-7 on the season and 10-5 in the ODAC with the loss.
Virginia Wesleyan was ahead by one point twice early in the contest, but the Yellow Jackets took control for a while. Randolph-Macon led by as many as eight points, 15-7, with 8:00 gone in the first half. A 19-8 run by the Marlins gave them a 26-23 advantage with 5:49 remaining in the opening period. But the Yellow Jackets scored the last nine points of the half, and went into the locker room with a 32-26 lead.
Randolph-Macon would never trail in the second half. The Marlins reduced the deficit to one point twice early in the period, but were not able to come all the way back. The margin was never below eight points in the last 14:46 of the game, and the Yellow Jackets outscored Virginia Wesleyan 13-1 over the final 3:56.
For Randolph-Macon, following the performances by Bergmann and Wansley, senior guard Tim Smith totaled 11 points and a game-high five assists.
Virginia Wesleyan was led by senior forward Ryan Kahle, with 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting (58.3%), which included four of six 3-pointers (66.7%). Sophomore forward Peter Warren added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman guard Marques Fitch contributed with eight points and team-highs of four assists and two steals.
