SAVANNAH, Ga.
Savannah Art and Design kept its school-record winning streak intact the hard way Saturday (Feb. 8) afternoon at the Ron Love Athletic Center on the campus of Savannah High School.
The Bees rallied from seven points down in the final 1:42 to defeat Newport News 64-60.
In the process, the Bees captured their school-record 19th win of the season as they improved to 19-4. They also won their school-record 14th consecutive game. The Builders fell to 10-10. SCAD returns to action for the final time this regular season as they host St. Mary's (Md.) in a 7 p.m. contest Monday (Feb. 10) at the Savannah Civic Center.
The Builders used an 8-0 run capped a 3-pointer by Charles Holiday, who finished with a game-high 21 points, to give Newport News a 59-52 lead with 1:42 left in the game.
After an Apprentice timeout, the Bees mounted their comeback. Two free throws by Labeeb Abdullah with 1:27 left closed the margin to 59-54. A Maze Toomer free throw 15 seconds gave the Builders their final point of the game and pushed the lead back to six points (60-54).
SCAD's Keith Davis, who needs 16 points to become the school's third 1,000-point scorer, followed his own miss with a 1:00 left to cut the lead to 60-56. After Apprentice was called for a backcourt violation, Davis hit two free throws 26 seconds later to cut the Newport News lead to two (60-58). On the ensuing inbounds play, Kyle Jones intercepted a Tevon Raikes pass and scored a basket to tie the game at 60.
Apprentice had a chance to win the game, but Wesley Adams stole a Reggie Proctor pass with 17 seconds left. After a SCAD timeout, Abdullah drove the lane and missed a short jumper as time was winding down. Adams followed Abdullah's miss and tipped it in with 0.4 seconds to give the Bees a 62-60 lead. The Bees added some insurance as Adams hit two of four free throws after the Builders were whistled for two technical fouls.
Abdullah finished with 16 points for the Bees while Davis finished with 14. Jones and Adams each added 12 points for SCAD. Jones also led the team with seven assists and seven rebounds. Toomer finished with 16 points for the Builders and added a game-high 12 rebounds.
