ELMHURST, Ill.
The Elmhurst men stunned No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan 74-72 in front of an estimated 1,200 fans at R.A. Faganel Hall.
"This is certainly one of our biggest wins this season," said head coach Mark Scherer. "Our guys really stepped it up when they needed to."
The Bluejays (8-10, 3-4 CCIW) led by as many as 15 points but held on for the two-point win. Elmhurst jumped out to an 18-15 lead with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half and never trailed. The Titans used an 11-0 run in the final 2:19 of the first half to close to 37-36 Bluejay lead at halftime.
The Bluejays began the second half opened up a 15 point, 66-51 lead with 5:54 to play in the second half, but Illinois Wesleyan rallied to pull to within four with under 30 seconds to play. A Seth Hubbard layup with one second left made it a 74-72 lead for Elmhurst. The Bluejays simply threw the ball in the length of the court to tick off the final second and come away with the win.
Wayne Bosworth turned in another solid performance finishing with 26 points on 9-for-11 shooting from the floor, including 6-for-8 from 3-point range. Adam Ackerman chipped in with 19 points of the bench and Gabe Kirstein added 10 points. Reuben Slock added nine points. D.J. Cooper finished with seven assists.
As a team, the Bluejays shot 48% from the floor on 25-for-52 shooting and 59% (13-for-22) from 3-point range. The Titans shot 42% from the floor (24-for-57) and 38% from downtown (9-for-24). Elmhurst committed just nine turnovers, while Illinois Wesleyan turned the ball over 15 times, resulting in 24 Bluejay points.
"We really shot the ball well tonight," said Scherer. "We knocked down all of our open looks and our bench really contributed some great time and scored some clutch points."
