SALISBURY, Md.
William Morley scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed a personal-best 13 rebounds to lead No. 4 Catholic to a 97-85 double overtime victory over Salisbury at Maggs Center on Wednesday.
All-American Matt Hilleary had 19 points, nine rebounds and five blocks for the Cardinals (18-2, 9-0 Capital Athletic Conference). Hasheem Alexander led the Sea Gulls (5-15, 3-6) with 24 points and Justin Rice had 23. It was CUA's seventh consecutive victory and fifth in a row against Salisbury.
Morley scored seven points in the second overtime, which began tied at 82. After Alexander hit a 3-pointer to give the Sea Gulls an 85-84 lead, the Cardinals scored the final 13 points. Morley hit a layup and Hilleary a jumper to put CUA on top, 88-85. Blair Mills (13 points), out of nearby Wicomico High, hit all four of his free throws during the game-clinching run.
Craig Avallone totaled 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Cards, who overcame a four-point deficit with 59 seconds to go in the first extra session. Morley's two free throws and Hilleary's jumper from the left elbow with 23 seconds left tied it.
Morley, who scored his 1,000th career point Saturday, exceeded his previous career highs of 24 points at York (Pa.) on Jan. 31, 2001, and 12 rebounds vs. St. Mary's (Md.) on Jan. 23, 2002.
CUA led by 12 with about seven minutes left in regulation, but was forced into the first overtime when Alexander's trey tied the contest at 73 with seven seconds remaining. Dameon Gibbs and Ryan Freeman paced Salisbury with seven rebounds apiece.
The win was the Cardinals' third double-overtime triumph on the Sea Gulls' homecourt. CUA set the school record for most points in a 131-128 on Feb. 17, 1999, and defeated Salisbury State 115-112 in two extra periods Dec. 5, 1995.
