BETHANY, W. Va.
Sophomore guard Chris Hatch hit a 3-pointer with 52 seconds to play, breaking an 81-81 tie and allowing the Westminster men's basketball team to post an 84-82 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory at Bethany this afternoon. It was the second consecutive win for the Titans, who improved to 9-10 overall, 3-2 in PAC play. The Bison, who suffered their third consecutive loss, dropped to 7-11, 1-4 PAC.
Both teams shot better than 50% in a blistering first half. Westminster led by as many as 12 points (38-26 with 7:58 left) only to see Bethany rally with a 13-4 run to cut the lead to one point (42-41) with 2:10 left. However, the Titans managed a 10-2 sput over the final minutes to take a 52-43 halftime advantage. The Bison roarded back early in the second half, taking a five-point lead (72-67) with 10:20 to play. The Titans fought back to tie the game late, setting up Hatch's game-winning shot. Jacob Dailer of Bethany was fouled with five seconds left. After hitting the first shot (cutting the lead to 84-82), he missed the second attempt and the rebound went out of bounds to Bethany with two seconds left. However, the Bison threw the inbounds pass away, securing the win for the Titans.
Westminster has a season-high six players scored in double figures in the victory, with a seventh player just one basket away from double digits. Leading the way was senior center Greg Foster, who posted team-high totals of 18 points and 10 rebounds to record his 12th double-double in 19 games this season. Hatch added 16 points in the win, followed by senior forward Jeff Simmons with 11, sophomore guard Craig Bohyer with 11, freshman point guard Brian Fadden with 10, junior center Tom Freed with 10, and freshman swingman Micah Delo with eight. Fadden added team-high totals of four assists and two steals, while he and Foster each recorded a pair of blocked shots. Derek Hoffman posted a career-high 28 points for Bethany.
