SAVANNAH, Ga.
Savannah Art and Design’s swarming defense stung another opponent Monday evening at the Savannah Civic Center.
The Bees, which are ranked 12th in field goal defense (38.3%) limited the Scots to 25% shooting from the floor (16-for-64), including a frigid 17.1% (6-for-35) in the first half as SCAD defeated Maryville (Tenn.) 68-58.
SCAD won its ninth consecutive game -- tied for the second longest in school history -- and improved to 14-5. Maryville saw its 11-game winning streak snapped and fell to 13-3. The Bees have handed the Scots two of their three losses this year.
Maryville scored five consecutive points, capped by a 3-pointer by Sidney Ellis with 7:04 remaining in the first half to take its largest lead of the game at 17-12.
The Bees then broke open the game with a 13-1 run over the next 4:16 to take a 25-18 lead on a 3-pointer by Wesley Adams with 2:51 left in the opening half. Adams finished with 12 points. SCAD took its largest lead of the half at eight points (29-21) with 37 seconds left on a jumper by James Omedo.
SCAD would push its lead out to 10 points (33-23) on a layup by Kyle Jones with 17:40 remaining in the game before the Scots would mount a rally. The Scots trimmed the Bees’ lead down to one point (49-48) on a jumper by Ruben Gonzalez with 5:56 left. However, that would be as close as Maryville would get as Jones’ 3-pointer ignited a 13-3 run for the Bees that pushed their lead back to 11 points on a natural 3-point play by Labeeb Abdullah with 1:52 left.
Keith Davis led the Bees with his 11th double-double of the season as he scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Abdullah finished with 11 and Jones kicked in 10.
Ben Robison led the Scots with 19 points and nine rebounds. Gonzalez added 10 points, while teammate Josh Tummel grabbed 10 rebounds.
