MENOMONIE, Wis.
When UW-Stout's Andy Bray went down to a calf injury very early in the UW-La Crosse game on Wednesday, it didn't look like the big man would be able to play the next game when No. 14 ranked UW-Whitewater came to town.
But Bray started, injured leg and all, and the post player ignited a 10-0 run midway through the second half that gave Stout (10-5, 5-2) an 87-77 win over Whitewater (12-3, 5-2), Saturday, Jan. 18 at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The win moves Stout into a second place tie with Whitewater and UW-River Falls. The Warhawks entered the game tied for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference lead with UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers, who had lost to Whitewater on Wednesday, downed UW-Superior, 69-53, while River Falls tripped up UW-Platteville, 77-70.
Trailing 56-52 with 10 minutes left in the game, Bray scored seven points, pulled down four rebounds and had an assist in Stout's two-minute, 10-0 run, pulling the Blue Devils into a 62-56 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. Stout built their lead to as much as 14 points, 80-67, with 27 seconds remaining.
Casey Chapman scored Stout's final six points for the game, all from the free throw line.
The Blue Devil defense was stellar, especially in the second half when they held the Warhawks to only 42% shooting from the floor.
Nate Templer finished the night with eight blocked shots, while Bray had three blocks. Julian Greer collected Stout's 12th blocked shot of the evening.
Stout used a balanced scoring attack, with Templer and Barrington Smith each scoring 16 points. Bray finished the night with 13 points and eight rebounds. Greer had 12 points and Chapman collected 11 points.
The Warhawks' Matt Jones led the way with 21 points. Londen Donlow had 18 points and Jonathon Hodges finished with 16 points. The Blue Devils held the Warhawks leading scorer, Aubrey Lewis-Byers, to six points, keeping him off the free throw line.
