Notre Dame (Md.) spoiled the dedication of the Trinity Center for Women and Girls in Sports by overcoming a 16-point halftime deficit to pull out a 67-64 win against Trinity (D.C.) in front of an enthusiastic crowd of about 700.
The Tigers (10-6, 4-3) led 43-27 at the half after shooting an even 50% from the field (17-for-34). Notre Dame, however, held them to only 21 points and 22% (7-for-32) in the second frame.
The Gators (11-9, 8-1) tied the game and took the lead with 3:31 to play as senior forward Gabrielle Kenny hit two free throws. Notre Dame never trailed from that point, making 7-of-10 free throws down the stretch.
"Our shots weren't falling as often as we liked in the first half," said Kenny, who finished 4-for-12 from the floor. "We knew we had to come out strong in the second half and we stuck it to them."
Martina Wheleer led the Tigers with nine points in the first half, but the Gators held her scoreless in the second. Becky Worsham and Tylissa Morris each scored 10 to lead Trinity, while Alicia Hopkins used her speed and ball-handling skill to slash to the basket for nine points.
"We made some adjustments to put us in better rebounding position and stop their drives to the basket," said Notre Dame head coach Scot Reisinger. "We knew (Hopkins) was going to have that potential coming in. We definitely had to shut her down."
"We're young," said Trinity head coach Christy Neff. "Everybody's a freshman or sophomore. They're young kids and it's hard to bounce back."
Sophomore guard Brynn Miscavige came off the bench to score 13 points, including 5-for-6 from the line, to lead Notre Dame.
Sophomore guard Kathleen Burley made four 3-pointers and had 12 points, while Kenny, senior guard Amanda Poppleton and freshman guard Monica Cherry each had 10.
