CANTON, N.Y.
The homestanding Saints took advantage of their size to block 10 Union shots and outrebound the Dutchwomen 51-36 as they handed Union its first defeat in 16 games. The victory enabled the 16-2 Saints to take sole possession of first place in the UCAA with their 7-0 record, Union fell to 6-1 in the league.
St. Lawrence, which led by nine at the half, took a 51-40 advantage with 6:30 left to play when Megan Dietrichsen hit a 3-point basket from the top of the key. Union, which went into the game averaging almost 30 points off of the opposition's turnover average of 26 per game, forced the Saints into 26 turnovers, but only scored 14 points off of those miscues. The taller Saints used their height advantage to move the ball down the court and continually break Union's pressure defense.
Down by 10 midway through the first half, Union tied the game when Kate DeSorrento's 3-pointer with 2:21 remaining in the first half brought the Dutchwomen all the way back, 24-24 tie. However, the Saints hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 9-0 run that gave them a 33-24 lead at intermission. Kelly O'Brien led St. Lawrence with 11 points while Dietrichsen, a 6-1 senior center, contributed five of her team's six blocked shots.
The Saints ended the first 20 minutes by hitting 11 of their 29 field goal attempts (37.9%) while the Dutchwomen connected on only five of their 35 shots (22.9%).
Union, which never got closer than five, 35-30 on Nicole Cerniglia's 3-pointer with 17:46 left to play, trailed by as many as 22, 70-48 with 45 seconds showing. Erika Eisenhut finished with 14 points for Union while DeSorrento had 13.
