Otterbein Defeats 'Berg Women’s Basketball Team, 78-66, in Westerville

WESTERVILLE, Ohio—The Heidelberg University women's basketball team began the final week of the 2011-12 season tonight, falling to Otterbein University, 78-66, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at the Rike Center in Westerville, Ohio. Sophomore guard Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky/St. Mary's) poured in a game-high of 29 points on a 12-of-21 shooting performance and grabbed six rebounds.

In addition to Phillips for Heidelberg (4-20, 1-6 OAC), sophomore guard Megan Miller (Tiffin/Columbian) chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior forward Molly Schriber (Sydney) added 10 points and seven rebounds. Phillips' 12 field goals were a career-high and three shy of tying the school single-game record.

Otterbein (18-6, 12-5 OAC) was led by Shea McCoy's 24 points on nine-of-17 shooting. Kristi Kotterman was one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards and Hannah Day tallied 10 points and seven rebounds. Chelsea Cannon scored nine pounds and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and Allie Leopard passed for eight assists.

Heidelberg took its only lead of the game at the 17:23 mark when Miller knocked down a three-point for a 4-3 edge.

Otterbein then jumped out to a 9-3 lead after Day canned a three-pointer of her own at the 14:23 mark to cap a 6-0 run and extended its lead to 18-10 when McCoy buried a triple at 8:03.

After taking a 24-13 lead at 6:12, the Berg scored six straight points, including four from Phillips, and cut the gap to 24-19 as the sophomore canned a jumper.

The Cardinals took another 11-point lead a 32-21 following an 8-2 run, capped at the 3:01 mark with a Kotterman trey. Otterbein would extend its lead to 18 points with less than 20 seconds to play and took a 43-24 lead into the break as Julie Macice made a buzzer-beating jumper just before halftime.

Otterbein started the second half on a 5-3 run, taking a 21-point lead—its largest of the game—following another three-pointer by Kotterman at 17:21.

Phillips then scored five straight points and converted a three-point play at 14:16 and Schriber buried a triple at 13:31 to cap a 7-0 run, pulling the Berg to within 48-37.

Otterbein extended its lead to 55-39, but the Berg again went on an 8-0 run, capped by a Phillips jumper at 10:33, moving Heidelberg to within 55-47.

The Cardinals answered with an 8-0 run of their own, sparked by four points from McCoy, who made3 a lay-up at the 8:43 mark to give Otterbein a 63-47 lead.

Otterbein maintained a lead of at least 12 points with as little as four minutes to go, but another Phillips-led 8-0 run, moving the 'Berg to within 71-64 with a lay-up with 1:30 on the clock.

A lay-up by Tabatha Piper and another three-point from McCoy iced the game for Otterbein.

The Berg shot 40.0 (26-of-65) percent from the field and 62.5 (10-of-16) percent from the charity stripe and committed just 16 turnovers.

The Cardinals were 42.9 (30-of-70) percent from the field, including 41.2 (seven-of-17) from long range, and 61.1 (11-of-18) percent from the line, and held a 50-38 advantage on the glass.

Heidelberg will close its season Saturday, Feb. 18 at the University of Mount Union at 3 p.m. The game will be televised on a delay basis by WIVM Ch. 52 in Canton and SportsTime Ohio. The game will show on both channels on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. and on WIVM on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m.
