Volpini Reaches 1,000-Point Mark as Cortland Holds Off Oswego, 63-60
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Brittany Cohen (Fayetteville/Jamesville-DeWitt) scored 13 points and handed out five assists and senior Micki Volpini (Newfield) surpassed the career 1,000-point mark as Cortland held on to defeat visiting Oswego, 63-60. The Red Dragons improved to 13-7 overall with their fifth straight win and moved into sole possession of fourth place in the SUNYAC standings with an 8-5 record.
Senior Megan Maycumber (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt) added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Red Dragons. Volpini finished with nine points and five rebounds and, at 1,004 points, is the 16th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke/Hoosick Valley) led Oswego (11-9, 6-7 SUNYAC) with 22 points and 10 rebounds. She hit 8-of-14 shots from the floor, 3-of-4 from three-point range. Kari Kipper (Loudonville/Colonie) totaled 12 points and five rebounds and Jenna Rossi (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough) led the squad with five assists.
Trailing 20-19 with 7:45 left in the first half, Cortland went on an 11-0 run to take a 30-20 lead. Freshmen Lindsay Minor (Wheatley Heights/St. John the Baptist) and Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) scored six and five points, respectively, to account for all of the points in that stretch.
Oswego cut its deficit to 33-28 on two Meagan Stover free throws with 31 seconds left, but Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) hit a long three-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give Cortland an eight-point lead.
Cortland tallied the first nine points of the second half to gain its largest lead at 45-28. Maycumber started the run with two layups and Volpini nailed a three-pointer from the right side with 17:18 left that put her exactly at 1,000 career points. Another Maycumber layup completed the run.
Oswego gradually worked its way back into the game over the next 10 minutes. Kipper's three-pointer with 8:46 left drew the Lakers within eight points and Ryan hit a jumper with 6:52 left to make the score 51-45.
The margin fluctuated between five and eight points the next six minutes. Cortland led 59-52 after two Cohen free throws with 1:26 left, but Kipper hit a trey with 46 seconds remaining to make it a four-point game. Following a Cortland missed foul shot, Stover converted a layup at the 32-second mark and Oswego was within two.
Cohen hit a free throw with 28 seconds left. She missed the second, but got the rebound and senior Molly Byrne (Syracuse/Bishop Ludden) made one foul shot to put Cortland up four. After Katrina Davenport (Honeoye) made a free throw with 18 seconds left, Oswego came down the court and Lauren Nunziato (West Sand Lake/Averill Park) hit a long trey with eight seconds left to cut the lead to 62-60.
With six seconds left, Cohen made a free throw but missed her second attempt. Oswego had a possession with a chance to tie, but was called for a carry with less than two seconds remaining.
Cortland will travel to New Paltz next Friday, Feb. 10, and to Oneonta on Saturday, Feb. 11, for SUNYAC contests.
