Hamilton powers past SUNY Potsdam, 63-43
Eliza Howe '13 scored a game-high 18 points to lead Hamilton College to a 63-43 win over SUNY Potsdam in a non-conference game at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Jan. 17.
Howe also posted six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Dani Feigin '14 poured in a career-high 17 points, and Kim Goidell '13 chipped in eight points and seven rebounds. Claire Hunsinger '13 scored nine points, and Olivia Pimm '14 pulled down seven boards to go along with three steals.
Jessica Kouzan '14 led the Bears with 11 points and three steals. Adedoyin Akingba '13 scored eight points and grabbed a game-high 10 boards, and Bailey Weigel '15 dished out three assists.
Potsdam (4-9 overall) scored the first eight points on a Kaley Arsenault '12 layup, followed by back-to-back 3-pointers by Kouzan and Hannah Kmiecinski '14.
After Arsenault converted another layup to give the Bears a 14-10 lead with 11:19 remaining in the half, the Continentals responded with a 12-0 run. Howe scored six points during the spurt, and gave Hamilton the lead for good on a jumper with 8:10 left. Howe capped the spurt with a layup to give Hamilton a 22-14 advantage with 6:43 remaining. The Continentals led 31-23 at the break.
Hamilton (6-9) opened the second half with a 12-2 run to go up 43-25 with 14:25 left. Goidell made a free throw, Howe converted a layup and Feigin drained a 3-pointer. Kouzan hit a pair of free throws to pull Potsdam within 37-25. A free throw and a 3-pointer by Howe were followed by a Hunsinger layup to complete the run. Hamilton led by as many as 22 with under a minute to play. Potsdam shot 20.8 percent from the floor, including 0-for-5 from 3-point range in the second half.
The Continentals held a 38-26 rebound advantage, and shot 40.7 percent from the floor. Potsdam shot just 28.9 percent from the field, and committed 23 turnovers. It was the first meeting between the two programs. Hamilton snapped its five-game losing steak. Potsdam lost its fifth straight game.
