Cortland Defeats Host Clarkson, 70-50
POTSDAM, N.Y. – Senior Brittany Cohen scored 17 points and handed out five assists as Cortland posted a 70-50 victory at Clarkson University in non-league action. The Red Dragons improved to 7-5 while the Golden Knights slipped to 5-3.
Junior Katrina Davenport, making her first start of the season, finished with 12 points, six rebounds and four steals. Senior Molly Byrne scored eight points and grabbed five boards, sophomore Megan Touhey added seven points and five rebounds and freshman Erin Wolstenholme recorded six points, six rebounds and three assists.
Leighann Tomita led Clarkson with 14 points and three assists. Tailah Pounds scored 10 points and Chrissy Scanlon led the Golden Knights with six rebounds.
Cortland used a 17-0 run to turn an early 5-3 deficit into a 20-5 lead with 8:43 left in the first half. Cohen scored five points in that stretch. The Red Dragons led 31-13 at halftime and held a 47-20 advantage with 15:11 left in the game.
Clarkson mounted a 16-2 run over the next five minutes, capped by a Scanlon jumper with 10:13 remaining, and cut Cortland's lead to 13 at 49-36. Touhey hit a jumper at the 9:44 mark to push the lead to 15 points and the Red Dragons led by at least 14 points the rest of the game.
Cortland shot 54 percent from the field in the second half and 42 percent for the game. The Red Dragons also made 18-of-21 free throws, led by Cohen's 6-for-6 effort. Cortland held the Golden Knights to 26 percent shooting in the first half and 33 percent overall.
Cortland will host Geneseo Saturday at 4 p.m. in a SUNYAC contest.
