Utica Dominates Cazenovia in Women's Hoops

Utica, N.Y. (12/5/2011) – 14 different players scored as the Utica College women's basketball team cruised to its most convincing win of the season, 65-32, over visiting Cazenovia College Monday night. The Pioneers (5-2) have now won three straight games headed into Friday night's non conference match-up at RPI.
Senior forward Justine Karts led all Pioneers with 11 points, while sophomore shooting guard Alyssa Filkins added nine points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor. Meghan Fiore chipped in with nine rebounds and eight points. Sophomore Casey Button came off the bench and netted a career-high seven points and four rebounds for UC.
The Pioneers caused 26 turnovers on the evening, which resulted in 19 points, and it truly was a balanced scoring effort as 35 of their points came off the bench. The Pioneer defense held Cazenovia (1-3) to just 22.2% (12-of-54) shooting from the floor.
Utica held the Wildcats scoreless for the first 6:19 of the contest as it jumped out to a quick 11-0 advantage. The Pioneers extended that lead to 17 points, 21-4, after freshman Mara Newland made a lay-up at the 9:07 mark. The Pioneers were able to maintain their lead and went into the half with a commanding 31-13 advantage.
In the first 6:08 of the second half Utica went on a 10-2 run to extend their lead to 26 points, 41-15. The Pioneers continued to pour it on and broke the 30 point barrier after freshman Adriana Surprenant drilled a free throw at 8:18. The 30+ point lead stuck and the final horn sounded with the home team on top by 33.
Three different Pioneers netted their first collegiate points including Button, freshman Hannah Jennings and classmate Stephanie Beck. Freshman two-sport athlete Adriana Surprenant scored four points, while Masra Newland and Brooke Martel each chipped in with five points apiece. Bridgette Greenwald, Brittany Baudanza, Samantha Stayer and Marissa Kahane also registered at least one point for UC.
Erin O'Malley led the way for the Wildcats with a game-high 14 points, while Jessica Converse and Megan McDermott added six and five points, respectively.
