Defense, Board Work Push Rochester Past Oswego
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of Rochester recorded 17 steals and held a sizeable rebounding advantage to post a 73-39 women's basketball victory over Oswego State in the season opener for both schools.
The Yellowjackets recorded 17 steals on 30 Laker turnovers and scored 22 points off the giveaways. Rochester outrebounded Oswego, 49-28. It was 32-4 at Oswego's end of the floor. Rochester grabbed 17 offensive boards and scored 12 second chance points.
Danielle McNabb was the only player in double figures for either team. She scored 10 points for Rochester, added four rebounds, two steals, and one block. Loren Wagner scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds. Amy Woods had seven points and eight rebounds – six off the offensive glass.
For Oswego, Kayla Ryan and Meagan Stover scored seven points each. Kassie Kleine had four points and seven rebounds. Ryan grabbed six rebounds.
Oswego committed 20 first half turnovers, leading to 15 Rochester points. Kristyn Wright had six first half points for Rochester. Ally Zywicki had three points, three assists, and two steals. She finished with a game-high five assists.
Ryan scored all seven of her points in the first half. Her three-pointer with 6:06 left got the Lakers within 23-14, but Rochester scored 10 of the next 12 points – by five different players – and built a 33-16 lead with 2:37 left. It was 35-19 at halftime.
