CAROLINA GARCIA NAMED HONORABLE MENTION ALL-NJAC
PITMAN, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University senior guard CAROLINA GARCIA (Plainfield, NJ/Franklin) was a consistent player for the Gothic Knight women's basketball team throughout her four-year career and she closes her playing days for the Green and Gold as an All-Conference selection. Garcia, who led NJCU in scoring this season at 12.3 points per game was voted Honorable Mention All-New Jersey Athletic Conference for the 2010-11 season by the league's 10 head coaches.
Garcia, who played from 2006-09 and returned this season after a year serving on the Student Government Organization to conclude her collegiate career, will graduate ninth in school history with 920 points. This season, in 24 games (22 starts), she registered 296 points, 63 rebounds (18 offensive, 45 defensive), 45 steals, 40 assists and 11 blocks in 856 minutes of action. She shot 119-375 overall (.317), 28-for-108 from three-point distance (.259) and .714 from the foul line (30-42).
Garcia averaged 12.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.9 steals, 1.7 assists and 0.5 blocks in 35.67 minutes per night. She scored in double figures in 19 of 24 games and led NJCU in scoring 13 times and assists in six games.
A fit player, Garcia played a full 40 minutes in a game a remarkable 22 times in her career and eight times this season. She finished her career No. 2 in school history in minutes played with 3,007.
"She was an experienced leader and an offensive threat for four years," noted first-year head coach SANDRA NUNEZ DATES. "We could always count on her to play big minutes for us."
This year, Garcia ranked second in the NJAC in minutes per game, 11th in scoring, 15th in three-pointers per game (1.2), 17th in three-point percentage, 18th in steals, 26th in blocked shots, 28th in field goal percentage, and 33rd in assists. If she had enough attempts to meet the league minimum, Garcia would have ranked eighth in free throw percentage. In NJCU's 13 NJAC games, Garcia ranked second in minutes and 14th in the conference in scoring.
Overall, Garcia concludes her career with 920 points, 312 rebounds, 237 assists, 139 steals, and 23 blocks in 95 games and 79 starts. She shot 366-1136 in her career (.322), 77-of-301 from three-point distance (.256) and .669 from the line (111-166). She was fourth in school history in games started and games played, fifth in assists, three-pointers made (77) and free throw percentage, and ninth in scoring and steals.
Garcia reached double figures in scoring 37 times with three contests of at least 20 points and a personal best of 30 as a junior on December 21, 2008. She led NJCU in scoring 23 times and assists in 13 games during her time on the court, and had four career efforts of five or more assists with three games of at least five steals. Garcia also was a defender on the NJCU women's soccer team in 2008 and 2009 and competed in cross country in Fall 2010.
