Men’s basketball downs Marymount on the road, 72-65

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Wesley College men's basketball team picked up an important 72-65 road win over the Marymount Saints on Wednesday at the Verizon Sports Center.

With the win, Wesley moves into sole possession of the sixth and final spot in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship Tournament, a full game ahead of Marymount and a game and half behind Frostburg State. Wesley and Marymount have three games remaining on the season while Frostburg St. has four games left in the season due to a postponement on Wednesday. 

Wesley had a slow start, getting down by as much as 12 in the first half when Marymount's Chauncey Pittman hit a three-pointer to make it a 27-15 game with six minutes to go in the first half. Wesley went on a run to end the half trailing Marymount 37-34.

It was a back-and-forth contest in the second half with both teams trading the lead in the midpoint of the second half. Wesley took the lead for good with a 13-4 run highlighted by a Brian Cameron jumper that gave Wesley the 54-53 lead over Marymount with eight minutes to go in regulation.

Wesley kept their defensive pressure up and Marymount couldn't solve the 2-3 zone in the latter part of the second half to seal the crucial conference victory for Wesley.

After turning the ball over nine times in the first half, Wesley took better care of the ball in the second stanza recording an 11 to 3 assist-to-turnover ratio and forced 10 Marymount turnovers.

Cameron tallied his second double-double of the season, the fourth of his career in the win, Cameron totaled 29 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, dished out six assists and stole the ball three times.

JW Lawson notched 18 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists off the bench. Evan Anderson registered 11 points, four rebounds and four steals.

Mychal Stefanides scored six points while Tyrone Craven chipped in with four assists.

Ibrahim Kamara had 16 rebounds and 10 assists to pace the Marymount offense.

The Wolverines (11-11, 7-9 CAC) will return home for their final homestand of the regular season. On Saturday, the Wolverines host the Mary Washington Eagles in CAC action, Tip-off from Wentworth Gymnasium is scheduled for 3 p.m. Before the game, the Wolverines will honor their four graduating seniors.
