Commonwealth Coast Conference Athletes of the Week
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK- Western New England junior guard Emily Savino (Ellington, Conn.) continued her remarkable play in a 3-0 week for the Golden Bears, including two crucial victories coming against top conference teams. Savino averaged 22.0 points and 3.3 steals per game, while shooting 56% (22-of-39) from the field, including 56% from three point territory (9-of-16) and a near perfect performance from the line, making 13-of-14 attempts. Savino lead the team in scoring in all three games this week, while netting 26 points in a 55-51 road victory over Salve Regina and14 points in a 66-39 triumph over Wentworth. She closed out the week scoring another 26 points en route to a 60-47 win at Endicott.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK- Gordon College freshman forward Leanna Tallamy (Wantage, N.J.) recorded a trio of double-doubles this week against CCC opponents. In a tough 59-54 loss to Roger Williams, Tallamy recorded a game high 29 points and gathered 11 rebounds. Tallamy went on to score 24 points and grabbed a remarkable 16 rebounds and four steals in a 57-44 defeat at Eastern Nazarene. Despite Gordon falling 79-27 to CCC leader University of New England, Tallamy scored 11 of the teams 27 points. For the week, Tallamy averaged 21.3 points and 13.0 rebounds per game, and continues to average a double-double per game for the season.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Curry College junior
forward A.J. Stephens (Stamford, Conn) shot 50%
(21-of-42) from the field as he averaged 18.0 points, 11.7
rebounds, and 1.0 steals as the Colonels
grabbed two wins out of its three contests in a week
of top CCC opponents. Stephens opened the week contributing 14
points and eight rebounds in a 73-61 losing effort
to University of New England. He went on to tally a 26-point,
12-rebound double-double in 22 minutes of play to help the Colonels
to a 64-60 road win over Roger Williams. Stephens once
again proved to be a major factor on the court in the
final contest of the week against Salve Regina. He scored
14 points and grabbed 15 boards and collected two steals against
the Seahawks to help seal an 80-73 victory over the conference
leader.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Endicott College freshman forward Andre Makris (Southbury, Conn.) contributed to every facet of the game last week, averaging 18.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.3 blocks, and 0.7 steals per game, and shot 65% from the charity stripe (9-of-14). Makris’ most impressive performance came in a 93-83 victory over Nichols to help snap the Gulls’ three-game losing streak. He led all players in scoring, netting 27 points to go along with eight boards, while shooting 65% from the field (11-of-17) and making 57% of his treys (4-of-7) in the matchup against the Bison. Makris once again led his team in points in a tough 83-74 loss to CCC foe Western New England, collecting18 points and pulling down nine boards, while making six of his eight free-throw attempts.
