PITTSBURGH, PA - The Medaille men's basketball team was coming off a big AMCC win over Mt. Aloysius the day before while La Roche had just lost to D'Youville on that same afternoon, so one of the teams was poised to change their fortunes when the two met this afternoon. It would be La Roche coming out on top as they handed the Mavs their first AMCC loss (70-59).
The Mavs jumped out to a quick lead and built as large as a ten point edge before heading into the intermission ahead (35-28). The lead would reach ten points again for the Mavs four minutes into the second half before the Redhawks would begin to chip away at the Medaille advantage. The game was a seesaw affair in the middle portion of the second half and then some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch would lead to a La Roche victory.
In a complete reversal of their game from the day before the Mavs rarely found themselves at the charity stripe as they finished (4 for 6) from the line. Meanwhile, the Redhawks were (14 of 17) from the stripe in what proved to be a game deciding edge. Also contributing to the La Roche win was their effort on the glass as they outrebounded the Mavericks (37-27), including a (13-8) edge on the offensive glass. The most impressive stat of the afternoon was the (12 of 14) shooting performance from behind the arc for La Roche. Those three key factors are what ultimately decided the game.
The Mavs received another strong performance off the bench from Sean Bellomo who continued to shoot the ball well from the floor, going (5 for 8) finishing with a team high (11) points. He also pulled down (3) boards and blocked a shot. Senior Angel Flores was efficient from the field as well with a (4 for 6) effort for eight points while Steve Bryant tallied nine points, including a (3 for 6) performance from behind the arc.
The loss snaps a three game win streak and drops the Mavs to (12-2) overall and (6-1) in AMCC play. They will look to get back in the win column when they host Penn State-Altoona on Saturday (1/14) at 3:00pm.
