Capers’ 22 Can’t Lift ‘Berg to Victory
TIFFIN, Ohio—Senior guard Darion Capers (Clayton/Madison-Trotwood) poured in a game and season-high 22 points on an eight-of-10 shooting night, but Baldwin-Wallace College defeated Heidelberg University, 90-69, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game tonight at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. The win was current B-W head coach and former Heidelberg head coach Duane Sheldon's 100th career victory. Sheldon was 64-93 in five seasons (2003-08) in Tiffin. Capers was just two points off his career high.
In addition to Capers for Heidelberg (1-5, 0-3 OAC), sophomore forward Victor Fortkamp (St. Henry) scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore guard Mike Petrie (Columbus/Beechcroft) had nine points and junior second-team All-OAC guard Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Harvest Prep) added seven points, grabbed eight rebounds and matched a game-high with three assists. Junior honorable mention All-OAC forward Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers), who scored six points, pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
B-W (5-1, 2-0 OAC) was led by Chris Ameen with 17 points and six rebounds and Kevin Krakowiak with 14 points. Tyler Ferrell and Ben Umbel added 13 points and 12 points, respectively. Umbel pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Both teams combined for 46 fouls and 46-of-66 from the charity stripe.
The Yellow Jackets opened a 5-0 lead to start the game following a jumper in the paint by Tyler Ferrell and a three-pointer by Kevin Krakowiak at the 18:49 mark.
Givner came back on the ensuing possession to can a jumper of his own and Petrie made one-of-two foul shots at the 18:07 mark to cut the B-W lead to 5-3.
The Yellow Jackets then went on a 15-5 run that spanned nearly eight minutes and extended their lead to 20-10 as Aaron Selmek made a lay-up with 10:40 to play in the opening half.
B-W jumped out to its first 20-point lead of the game as Umbel made a pair of free throws at the 5:37 mark to give the Yellow Jackets a 34-13 lead.
The Student Princes outscored B-W, 9-8, over the next 3:22 and senior forward Paul Dunn (Tiffin/Mohawk) sank two free throws to make the score 41-22 with just over three minutes on the clock.
Umbel converted a lay-up just seconds later for a 43-22 B-W advantage and the Yellow Jackets led by at least 20 points for the remainder of the first half.
The Yellow Jackets led by as many as 31 points to start the second half. Heidelberg cut the B-W lead to 65-48 by the 10:41 mark as Capers led a 15-1 run in just 3:51, scoring 10 of the team's points, and connecting on four straight free throws.
The Berg got as close as 82-67 when Petrie took advantage of a fast break with a lay-up, but just 2:06 remained on the clock.
The Student Princes shot 42.9 percent (15-of-35) in the second period after the opening the game by shooting 26.7 percent (eight-of-30). Despite the loss, the Berg held a 49-41 advantage on the glass, including 18 second-chance looks.
B-W was 42.6 percent (29-of-68) from the field, including five-of-eight from the three-point line in the first half, and converted 75.8 percent (25-of-33) of their free-throw attempts.
The Student Princes close the week Saturday, Dec. 10 with a 4 p.m. tilt at Muskingum University as the nightcap of an OAC men's and women's doubleheader in New Concord.
